Team Mak Attack: T-shirt fundraisers today to help Carson City girl with rare kidney disease
Makayla Warner was an energetic 2 year old with a contagious giggle. Suddenly, she started waking up with swollen eyes, which turned into a growing "Buddha belly."
After a few tests, we found out Makayla's kidneys were “spilling protein.” She was Care-Flighted to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital (LPCH) at Stanford in between 2 snowstorms on Christmas Eve with her mother, Shanna Cobb-Adams, by her side.
Makayla was soon diagnosed with Minimal Change Disease, a type of Nephrotic Syndrome, and spent a week in the hospital, which would be the first of many admissions battling this very rare kidney disease.
Although the word "minimal" is misleading, this kidney disease is nowhere near small in terms of complications.
Makayla is a frequent relapsing, steroid dependent case. She spent 8 years on very high doses of Prednisone to keep her kidneys functioning properly. Although we are incredibly grateful for her response to that treatment, the long term effects of this drug are severe and detrimental to her health and well-being.
Makayla has a history of responding well to treatment temporarily, only to have a negative reaction to the treatment later down the road. One reaction caused her to be in so much pain, she couldn't walk for a week! She was hospitalized again on Easter 2016 to battle this reaction. After almost a week in the hospital, she went home on crutches.
Fast forward to May 2017 — a 2nd attempt with Cyclosporine started in the summer of 2016 and it has kept Makayla in remission for 1 WHOLE YEAR and off Prednisone for 10 months!! We are incredibly blessed for this positive change in Makayla’s health!!
On May 20, 2017, Makayla will attend the annual Bay Area NephCure Walk in Danville with her mother, 2 brothers, Jesse and Andrew Case, her grandma, Kristy Scott, and anyone else available to join Team Mak Attack!
This is the closest event to her hometown of Carson City and truly the most rewarding opportunity for her to meet other children and adults battling Nephrotic Syndrome! Please check out our fundraisers to the right and help support Makayla’s dream of fighting for a cure for Nephrotic Syndrome! Go here for Makayla's Facebook support page.
