Members honored at NJROTC Award Ceremony
The 2017 NJROTC award ceremony was held Monday night in Carson City, where cadets, officers, chiefs and commanders were recognized for their continued commitment to Carson High School, their community and country.
The evening was represented by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, along with NJROTC leaders past and present. Crowell, a member of the Navy League, is a Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain. Sen. Dean Heller and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto each sent a representative from their office who presented awards to the unit.
Emcee was Cadet Lieutenant Junior Grade Wesley Sonnemaker, who was promoted to Lieutenant as the Battalion Administrative Officer.
Due to their excellent performance in all aspects of NJROTC, cadets can earn a long list of medals, certificates, checks, scholarships, pins, and ribbons. Some of the various awards include: Sanctions Certificate, Certificate of Appreciation, Marine Corps Lead, American Legion Post Award, Teddy Roosevelt Youth Medal, Daughters/Sons of American Revolution, Military of World Wars Award, Nevada National Guard Award, Distinguished Cadet, Honors Cadet, and Purple Heart. All representing actions of courage, leadership, kindness, volunteering, and academic achievement.
Along with the award ceremony, a change in command occurs annually, where the senior battalion commander of the 2016-17 year, Robert White, passed the torch to the next commander of the 2017-18 year. This year, Chris Berggren marks the new change within the NJROTC program, becoming the new Battalion commander for the 2017-18 year.
Seniors recollected on the great memories they had during their four-years with the program, describing how much they appreciated the companionship their peers offered throughout their journey. With parents by their side, senior members of the NJROTC program were relieved of their duties in their exit ceremony.
Junior cadet Cody Stock spoke about his experience so far in the NJROTC program.
“It has changed my life, and it is really inspirational to see what everyone can accomplish if you get together as a team,” Stock said. “For the seniors, it was very emotional to see them go. Because they were very good to us.”
