Carson City arrests: DUI suspect caught after driving more than 100 mph

A 21 year-old man was arrested early Friday morning for multiple traffic misdemeanors, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said, including first offense driving under the influence, speeding, failure to maintain a lane, driving with a suspended license and expired vehicle registration.

The Sacramento, Calif., man was arrested at 4:23 a.m. Friday in the area of Fairview Drive and Roop Street. According to the report, a sheriff's deputy observed the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 580 at 103 mph (confirmed by radar) in a 65 mph speed zone.

Law enforcement caught up with the speeding vehicle at Fairview Drive and Saliman Road, where it was clocked at 48 mph in a 35 mph speed zone, the report said.

The suspect vehicle had also crossed the travel lanes and was splitting the two lanes for about 200 feet, the report said.

A traffic stop was initiated and contact made with the driver who emitted a strong odor of marijuana and displayed red, watery eyes. His eyelids were also observed to be droopy, the report said, his movements were slow and forced.

A records check showed expired vehicle registration and a suspended driver's license.

The suspect admitted to having smoked marijuana within the last hour. He consented to field sobriety tests, which demonstrated signs of impairment.

The suspect was then handcuffed and taken into custody, transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $1,000.

Dispatch advised that authorities had responded to previous domestic battery calls at the same location, and that the suspect had fled the scene, the report said.
