Fire crews called to brush fire near Carson City Airport runway
Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called to a brush fire Thursday afternoon at the Carson City Airport.
The fire, reported at around 3 p.m., is on the north side of the airport near a runway and is believed to have been caused by an agriculture tractor that was operating in the area. The tractor reportedly touched off dry brush which ignited and started spreading, including to the tractor itself.
The airport has been closed to air traffic coming in and out of the airport until further notice, according to dispatch. The fire had reportedly put up smoke visible to the eastern part of the city and flames visible from the airport, according to firefighters on scene.
It was reported at around 100 feet by 10 feet and growing when firefighters arrived and had grown to around 1/2 an acre in size before a line was created around the fire, according to a battalion chief on scene.
Firefighters were able to get a handle on it by around 3:25 p.m.
