Officer shot on Kingsbury Grade following pursuit, suspect in custody

UPDATE 11:35 a.m.: Minden, Nevada- Update. Officer involved shooting.

The suspect in the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office officer involved shooting, 43 year old Oakland resident, Stefon Demar Jefferson has been charged with attempted murder of a police officer in addition to numerous additional felonies related to this investigation.

The DCSO sergeant underwent surgery for the gunshot wound to his left hand and is in very good spirits. The sergeant is expected to be released from the hospital this afternoon. Additional surgeries performed by a specialist are expected later within the next week.

The Douglas County Sheriff Office wishes to thank the public for the outpouring of support for the men and women of our agency.

A new conference will be scheduled at 2:00 pm at the Douglas County Law Enforcement Center.

Additional information will be released when it becomes available.

UPDATE 9:05 a.m.: According to Carson City dispatch, Kingsbury Grade has been cleared to reopen.

UPDATE 8:30AM 4/27/19 by Paula Peterson, South Tahoe Now: An observant officer from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was on patrol near the Heavenly Village at approximately 9:45 p.m. Friday night when he saw a car listed on a Bay Area police "Be On The Lookout" report go through an intersection. The report said the driver was a suspect in two homicides, one in each Oakland and San Francisco.

He followed the vehicle and attempted to pull it over with the assistance of another officer, but the driver took off and a pursuit began.

The two SLTPD officers followed the Toyota Corolla over Kingsbury Grade (SR207) as Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was getting into position at the bottom of the hill. They followed until about three-quarters of the way down when DCSO took over according to Jason Cheney of the SLTPD.

Shortly after that, the Corolla crashed about one-quarter mile west of Foothill Road, on Hwy 207. The suspect shot at DCSO deputies, striking a sergeant in the hand. He then surrendered to authorities without incident and was taken into custody.
Arrested was 43-year-old Stefon Jefferson.

The sergeant was transported by Care Flight to Renown Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was going to have surgery on his hand.

No shots were fired at SLTPD.

Cheney said deputies from El Dorado County Sheriff's Office came into South Lake Tahoe from the West Slope to help cover the City during this incident.

Kingsbury Grade was closed overnight and is now in the process of being reopened.

UPDATE 11:46PM: A Douglas County sheriff's officer suffered non-life threatening injuries after being shot in the hand Friday night following a vehicle pursuit that began in South Lake Tahoe. The suspect in custody was wanted for a double homicide Friday in the Bay Area.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said multiple agencies are involved as part of a mutual aid agreement and that the Carson City Sheriff's Office is part of the investigating team as well as the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Investigation Division.

The Douglas County officer, reportedly a sergeant, was taken to the hospital with injuries to the hand. The male suspect is in custody.

According to the San Francisco Police Department's Twitter feed, the man arrested in Douglas County was 43-year-old Stefon Jefferson, a suspect wanted for a double homicide in the Bay Area on Friday. At the time he fled he was driving a black 4-door Toyota Corolla.

South Lake Tahoe Police was involved in the pursuit, which began at the south shore and moved across the state line into Douglas County. No other officers were injured. Kingsbury Grade has been closed as officers investigate the incident.

An officer was shot Friday night following a vehicle pursuit that began in South Lake Tahoe and ended at the bottom of Kingsbury Grade in Douglas County.

At least one officer was shot in the hand, according to Douglas County dispatch. A Care Flight helicopter was called and was to land in the area of Foothill Road and Kingsbury. The suspect fled on foot and is now in custody, according to dispatch.

It is unknown at this time whether the officer or officers who were injured are from South Lake Tahoe or Douglas County.

The pursuit began at around 9:40 p.m. in the South Lake Tahoe area, and went up State Route 207 Kingsbury Grade and ended at the bottom of the grade near Foothill Road. Multiple agencies were called to respond including the Carson City Sheriff's Office, which had moved its patrol units to the Mica Drive area to set up spikes in case the pursuit was to reach the Carson City line.

It is unclear at this time what led to the pursuit. The suspect is believed to be a wanted individual from the Bay Area. We will update as more information becomes available.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.
