Carson City Fire Department plans May 2 evacuation and shelter drill
CARSON CITY — An evacuation and sheltering exercise for the residents of the Old Clear Creek Road subdivision will be from noon to 4 p.m. on May 2, Carson City Fire Department officials announced today.
The evacuation drill in the southwest part of Carson City is being carried out in conjunction with Nevada’s 5th Annual Wildfire Awareness Week. The intention is to remind residents and homeowners that the area is within a wildland fire environment and therefore all are encouraged to protect their homes and community from embers that can attack dry brush and trees during a wildfire.
The exercise is designed to test emergency communications and evacuation plans, and to provide the residents with an opportunity to practice evacuating themselves and their pets to a designated shelter.
Participating residents of the Clear Creek Subdivision will be notified of the immediate threat of a fast moving wildland fire. The notification will allow residents to test their evacuation plans by providing them with actual experience in leaving their homes.
“This exercise will really give Clear Creek residents a chance to experience an evacuation without the danger,” said Fire Chief Stacey Giomi. “Evacuation is only part of the picture, residents must ensure they are Ember Aware and that their homes could survive an ember attack from a wildland fire."
Sheriff’s Department personnel will patrol the area to practice their emergency warning skills. Fire Department personnel will access emergency water supplies that have been created in the Clear Creek area to test their ability to obtain water during an emergency.
Members of the Carson City Fire Department’s all-volunteer Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will establish and operate a shelter in the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall located on Old Clear Creek Road across from Costco.
Local agencies, including the American Red Cross, Fire Safe Council, Nevada Division of Forestry, National Weather Service, Carson City Health and Human Services, Carson City Fire Department, and Carson City Animal Services will be on-site to distribute information and answer questions.
