Hawaiian Lei Day celebration happening April 30 at Nevada State Museum in Carson City
CARSON CITY — E komo mai (welcome)! The Nevada State Museum is celebrating Lei Day on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free for this annual event. In Hawaii, "May Day is Lei Day" and the museum is sharing this tradition with the northern Nevada community with a lei making demonstration by Nā ʻŌiwi O Hawaiʻi, Northern Nevada Hawaiian Civic Club.
Lei Day will also include traditional Hawaiian music by the band Pono and a hula performance by the Reno-based hālau hula (hula school) Ka Pā Hula ʻO Kawaiolanoelaniokāne.
“We are delighted to once again host this unique event,” said Nevada Division of Museums and History Administrator Myron Freedman. “We invite everyone to experience the aloha of a Lei Day celebration. It is a beautiful feast for your senses and will fill your heart and mind with joy.”
The day’s activities start at 10:00 a.m. with lei-making demonstrations and kids crafts that will continue until 2:00 p.m.
The Hawaiian band, Pono, performs from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A traditional hula performance by Ka Pā Hula ʻO Kawaiolanoelaniokāne will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The museum will also exhibit the story of Lei Day, the various types of materials used for lei-making and a new acquisition from artist Jackie Pias Carlin.
You may also satisfy your sweet cravings with traditional Hawaiian treats by Island Breeze Events LLC who will be selling shave ice and ice cream.

The museum is at 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City. Regular museum admission is $10 adults and free for members and children ages 17 and younger.
