Carson City jail inmate booked for allegedly taunting K-9 during jail cell drug sniff
A Carson City Jail inmate was booked Tuesday for suspicion of felony mistreatment of a police animal, according to a sheriff's office booking report.
Nathan Chavez, 38, was booked for the alleged offense following an incident involving a K-9 during a jail cell drug sniff, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
At approximately 7 a.m. a deputy was contacted by a sergeant who asked the deputy to bring K-9 Cash to the male general pod for a jail cell sniff.
The deputy was advised jail staff had four jail cells that needed to be searched for possible narcotic contraband. The deputy deployed K-9 Cash into the cells and as the deputy was conducting a search of another cell, inmate Chavez began interfering with the dog, the report states. The suspect began speaking loudly in an aggressive manner at the K-9, telling him to "sick him" and "get him" making direct eye contact with the dog, intimidating and taunting, the report states.
The officer gave the suspect several verbal commands for him to stop taunting the dog. The man continued to taunt the dog, making eye contact and repeating the same words as he was flinching at the dog, the report states. Due to the taunting, the dog went from looking for narcotics into apprehension behavior, the report states.
The deputy advised the suspect that he was going to be booked for intimidating and taunting the K-9. Chavez advised he did not care, the report states. Bail: $10,000.
