Western Nevada College hosts annual SkillsUSA welding competition
Northern Nevada area students gathered at Western Nevada College Thursday to participate in the annual SkillsUSA competition, a national competition held at local, state, and national levels in the field of welding.
Not only is it a competition, but a networking opportunity as well for students who anticipate joining the workforce as skilled welding technicians.
Nearly 30 students from high schools around the state compete, which includes shielded metal-arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, oxy-acetylene cutting, and gas metal-arc welding.
SkillsUSA empowers its members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American Citizens,” says SkillsUSA. “SkillsUSA improves the quality of our nation’s future skilled workforce through the development of Framework skills that include personal, workplace, and technical skills grounded in academics.”
SkillsUSA serves more than 360,000 students and instructors each year. Membership totals over 400,000. Since 1965, SKillsUSA has served more than 13.5 million annual members cumulatively, their website says.
Winners of the competition will advance to the SkillsUSA Championship, which is scheduled for June 24-28 in Louisville, Kentucky.
