CHS class of 2019 students deliver senior project presentations to Carson City panels
Students who make up Carson High School's class of 2019 made their senior project presentations public Monday to dozens of Carson City community volunteers and past CHS graduates.
More than 350 seniors worked energetically over a span of nearly eight months to prepare for the culmination of their projects, which happened Monday when volunteer residents evaluated student portfolios and speeches. Sure the seniors sweated it as is the common sentiment of anyone who has gone through the process. But in the end they learned something about themselves and what they can accomplish.
CHS Senior Evan Bowman said the senior project experience was challenging but ultimately "it helped us gain confidence in ourselves. Now we're looking forward to graduating and bright futures ahead of us." Evan painted his 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass as part of his senior project.
Senior Jordan Woods agreed with Bowman about the challenge, which ultimately turned into pride and accomplishment now that the projects are finished, he said. For his senior project, Woods participated in a re-roofing project.
"I feel like I'm graduating already," said Erika Nauyoks following her presentation. Erika did her project on fitness.
The senior project got its beginnings when former CHS Principal Fred Perdomo, then the Dean of Students, and Mary Jean Lang, then CHS Language Arts Department Chair, went to a Model Schools Conference where they learned about and then introduced the Senior Project to teachers and students as a culminating event for seniors, said CHS English teacher Phil Brady.
Piloted with a few classes for a couple years, it was then instituted as a CHS graduation requirement, said Brady, who is the weekly columnist of Senator Square, a weekly conversation that highlights CHS events and happenings as well as student, faculty and staff achievements.
Now, no CHS student will receive a diploma unless he completes all aspects of this truly amazing, and one-of-a-kind assignment, where students pick a subject to study where they participate, and follow through with it with their conclusions and presentations.
Throughout the years, students have had turned in projects where they've job shadowed people in the skilled medical, dental and law professions as well as local and state government, animal care, automotive, landscaping, ranching, computer science, law enforcement, public works and journalism.
CHS Senior Ryan Wright, who did his project on personal development involving golf, wishes to pass along some advice to future seniors.
"Don’t procrastinate getting started on your project," he said. "That adds stress. Instead, plan it out and start early. That way you'll have fun learning."
