Carson City sales taxes still look bad. Here's a breakdown.
Sales tax collections in Carson City plunged again in January, falling 16.2% from January of 2009. Sales tax collections statewide were down 8.1% in January. They were off 4.8% in Washoe County, down 2.2% in Douglas, minus 22% in Lyon and down 12.7% in the Fallon area.
By category in Carson City, construction was off 85% in January compared to January of last year. Car and truck sales were down in Carson City by 16.6%. Home furnishings fell 17%, and electronics and home appliances were off 16%. Building materials were down 7.5%, sporting goods off 10%, general merchandise stores like Walmart were down 9%, and restaurants and bars saw a ten percent drop in their business. But it wasn't all bad news this time. Sales tax collections for the performing arts and spectator sports increased 11.5% in Carson City during the month of January. Clothing sales also rose 12.3% and taxable food store sales rose 1.6% although there is no sales tax on food itself.
Sales taxes make up approximately 40% of Carson City general fund, and thus far in the fiscal year ending June 30th, Carson City City Hall has suffered a 16% decline in sales tax collections for the year. Down 12% for Douglas County, off 13.4% for Washoe, minus 18% for Lyon and down just over 15% statewide.
Some analysts say Nevada's heavy reliance on discretionary tourist spending via gaming and sales taxes has badly backfired on the state. Yet another legislative study of Nevada's anemic tax structure is already underway to hopefully recommend changes to the state's tax code in an effort to end Nevada's chronic revenue roller-coaster boom-and-bust cycles.
