Two jailed in separate Carson City DUI hit and runs

Carson City sheriff's deputies made two DUI related arrests Wednesday that involved the suspects leaving the scene of accidents. A 33-year-old Carson City man was arrested at 7:27 p.m. in the 1600 block of Brown Street and faces three misdemeanor traffic charges, including DUI and leaving the scene.

Officers were dispatched to the area for a non-injury accident. It was reported that one of the driver's involved was walking north on Brown Street. An officer made contact with the suspect and noticed the man had alcohol on his breath, red eyes and slurred speech. The man initially told the officer that he was involved in the accident and only began to drink after the accident, the arrest report states.

A background check revealed the man had a suspended driver's license. He was asked if he would submit to a field sobriety test and the man declined, stating he was driving drunk and that he wanted to be taken to jail.

Once at jail he became uncooperative, the arrest report states. A phlebotomist was called and two vials of blood were taken. The man was booked for DUI, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident. Bail: $2,396.

Meanwhile, a 73-year-old Carson City man faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and hit and run causing property damage. Officers arrested the man on Wednesday, 5:15 p.m. in the area of Bryan Circle following a crash on Russell Way witnessed by an off-duty deputy. The man was seen driving a Buick, crashing into a fence and then leaving the scene.

The off-duty officer said the man, with a long white beard and white hair, crashed into a fence in the 1800 block of Russell and then sped up to approximately 80 mph in the posted 35 mph to flee the scene. The man then arrived at the Bryan Circle address and got out of the vehicle with two dogs, according to the off-duty officer in the arrest report.

Arresting officers went to the home and made contact with the man who initially said he had been home all day. Officers could smell a slight odor of alcohol and noted the man had slurred speech and red watery eyes. The man then advised that he had just returned home from picking up his two dogs and that prior to picking up the dogs he stopped and had a few beers and a few shots, the arrest report states.

The arresting officer asked the man if he would perform some standardized field sobriety tests to determine whether or not he was impaired. The man told the officer that he had been drinking but didn't want to take the tests.

He also asked the officer: "What will happen if I do not take the tests," according to the arrest report. The arresting officer told the man that he likely would be placed into custody for hit and run and suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The man told the officer that he did not want to go to jail and would try the tests, the arrest report says.

During the question portion of the field sobriety tests, the man advised the officer that his last drink of alcohol was at 4:30 p.m. at a bar. He also said he consumed two 20-ounce cans of Budweiser and had two shots of Old Crow, the report states.

During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, the officer observed a lack of smooth pursuit in both eyes; a distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation in both eyes and nystagmus onset in both eyes prior to a 45-degree angle, the report states.

The officer then explained the walk and turn test in which the man advised that he would not be able to perform the test due to his age, the report states. The officer then explained and demonstrated the one leg stand test which the man attempted several times but was unable to maintain his balance.

The officer stopped the test for the man's safety in which the man replied: "I can't do that when I'm sober," the arrest report states. Bail: $1,764.

In other arrests:

— A 19-year-old man was arrested and faces a gross misdemeanor charge of battery on a police officer, obstructing and resisting arrest and violation of terms set in his probation. The man was arrested March 25 in the 3100 block of Northgate at 10:36 p.m.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to an apartment where a male known as "Hutch" was threatening to beat up a woman inside. The woman was shaken and feared for her life and told officers the man, who was intoxicated, had threatened to kill her. When she said that she was going to call the police, the man told the woman that he would beat them up too, according to the arrest report.

After some investigating, officers arrived at the Northgate address and knocked on the door. After about 10 minutes the man opened the front door and looked outside.
