Carson City area weather: Cool down ahead with gusty winds, rain and snow showers
A weak to moderate storm will bring gusty winds, valley rain and Sierra snow as well as a return to colder temperatures around the Carson City and Lake Tahoe areas through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds will be elevated through Tuesday evening with peak valley gusts 30-45 mph and Sierra ridge gusts in the 80-110 mph range. Wind gusts up to 50-65 mph will be possible for wind-prone areas along Highways 395 and 95, as well as Interstate 580 south of Reno. Plan for travel difficulties for high profile vehicles in wind prone areas. Localized areas of blowing dust are possible, especially near and east of Highway 95.
Rain and snow showers will increase in coverage and intensity, especially for northeast California and the northern
and central Sierra, later today into Wednesday morning. Travel impacts are expected in the Sierra mainly overnight into the early morning hours; warmer daytime temperatures will limit accumulation on roadways.
There's a winter weather advisory for the Lake Tahoe area from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Lake Tahoe area can expect snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches, except 5 to 10 inches near and west of Highway 89. Local amounts of 10 to 15 inches possible near the crest. Winds are expected to gust as high as 40 to 45 mph Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Western Nevada cities should plan for some light snow Tuesday night into early Wednesday with some impacts due to slick roads possible. It may be wise to leave a little earlier for the Wednesday morning commute, according to the weather service.
For the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, the weather services says there's around a 60 percent chance of rain and snow showers Tuesday, a 50 percent chance of snow showers on Wednesday, and a 30 percent chance for snow showers Thursday.
High temperatures will be about 10 degrees below normal Tuesday through Thursday with overnight lows Wednesday through Friday mornings dropping below freezing in even the warmest valley locations.
