Lyon Schools Welcome New Gardens
By Wendy Madson, Healthy Communities Coalition liaison for school garden implementation
Nearly 2,000 students are getting their hands dirty in school gardens, thanks to a USDA grant received by Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey, a private nonprofit. This season school gardens are being created in Dayton and Silver Springs, and next season they'll be created in Yerington and Fernley schools.
With project leadership from the Coalition's partner, Community Roots, and donations from Celtic Landscaping, Holley Family Farms, and Coons Construction, dirt has been dug, earthworms have been placed in the soil and the beautiful organic alfalfa has been laid, serving as the perfect mulch.
The best part is that the kids have been doing all the work and loving every minute of it! In a couple of weeks, the kids will be planting over 2,000 seeds in cups in their classrooms.
Once the weather warms up enough, they will be back out in the garden, planting their class-grown vegetable starts. We can hardly wait!
If you'd like to be involved with the school gardens, which will continue to need volunteers through the summer and early fall, please contact Wendy Madson at (775) 250-7884. For updates and more photos, look for Community Roots on Facebook.
