Carson City area weather: Snow continues Sunday morning, chain controls throughout region
Heavy snow continues Sunday morning around Carson City and surrounding counties, dropping several inches in some valley areas and causing travel headaches throughout the region.
As of 7 a.m. Mt. Rose Highway is closed from From Sunridge Drive to to Douglas Fir Drive, and I-80 over Donner from Floriston to Nevada border.
Chains and snow tire controls are in effect on US-395 through Carson Valley into Carson City, US-395 Alt from Eastlake to I-580 and I-580 from Carson City through Washoe Valley.
Chains or snow tires are also required on Highway 50 East from Carson City to Silver Springs and Highway 50 West to Lake Tahoe.
For the greater Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and surrounding counties, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday morning with up to 4 inches of additional snow and wind gusts as high as 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Travel could be very difficult, NWS forecasters advise. Strong winds may produce near-zero visibility at times, especially along I-580 through Washoe Valley. The latest road conditions can be obtained by going to NVroads.com or calling 511.
For NDOT and the Nevada State Police Northern Command of the Highway Patrol, the past week has brought hundreds of hundreds of assists, crashes, and slide-off incidents. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the greater Lake Tahoe area through 4 a.m. Monday, with additional snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches at lake level, and 10 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet, according to the weather service, already adding to the snow levels that dropped Saturday and overnight.
