Woman dies in early Friday I-580 vehicle rollover in Washoe Valley
The Nevada Highway Patrol has provided more details of Friday morning's fatal crash on I-580 in Washoe Valley in which a female passenger died, forcing the closure of the southbound lane for several hours as troopers investigated.
NHP troopers were called to the area in Washoe Valley north of Bellevue Drive just after 6 a.m. Preliminary crash investigation details indicate that a white Dodge pickup driven by Oscar Esparza, 50, of Sparks, was traveling southbound on the interstate when he allowed the vehicle to drift to the left and into the inside dirt median, said NHP Trooper Duncan Dauber.
The vehicle overturned ejecting both the driver and female passenger of the vehicle. The pickup then landed back on its wheels and proceeded in a west/southwest direction, crossing both southbound travel lanes before coming to a stop in a field on the west side of Interstate I-580, said Dauber.
Esparza was taken to Reno hospital by Care Flight. The female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash due to injuries sustained during the incident. Her identification is being withheld until family can be notified, said Dauber.
Both occupants were believed to have not been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and impairment is under investigation at this time, said Dauber.
Trooper Karen Garretson of the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (MIRT) is investigating this incident.
