CDC to Carson City health officials: Mother, three pups of litter test negative for rabies
Carson City Health and Human Services has received the following information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
The mother of the litter of 10 puppies and three additional puppies have tested negative for rabies. CCHHS has notified the affected families of the results and continues to advise on precautions and post-exposure treatment. The rabies virus is currently only detectable once the infection has reached the brain. There is still a risk that the remaining puppies are infected. Dogs can shed the virus for several days before they start showing the clinical symptoms of the disease.
It is the responsibility of public health to take all precautionary measures to protect the health of our community and prevent the spread of disease. Therefore, it is still extremely important to identify the remaining 10th puppy from the litter. If you have any information regarding this dog, a brindle female approximately 14 weeks old, please contact Carson City Health and Human Services immediately at (775) 887-2190.
Be advised that Carson City Health and Human Services is the official source of information on this case and will not comment on rumors posted online by unofficial sources.
