Carson City business report for February indicates turbulent month
Carson City is no doubt swimming in the same economic pool that has gripped the nation. The latest city business report shows a mixed bag of economic news.
Released today is the city's recap of economic trends for February. In case you don't know about it, in July 2009 the Board of Supervisors adopted a comprehensive business plan that contains a series of objectives grouped into sections representing different aspects, or perspectives of the quality of life in Carson City. Additionally, a set of objectives has been adopted that speak to how Carson City government will operate, according to the city's Web site.
The report can be found at http://www.carson-city.nv.us/index.aspx?recordid=318&page=19
First, the good news. Money paid to the city in charges for services received exceeded the city's projected target by $734,745. Carson City business licenses and permit revenues also saw a gain of a little over $100,000.
However hitting below the target range for the month of February were general fund and property tax revenues. Respectively, the general fund is $1.4 million under target for the month, and property tax revenue $104,711.
The numbers also saw some trouble in the areas of intergovernmental revenue, i.e. sales taxes, fines and forfeitures and miscellaneous revenues to the general fund.
— Intergovernmental revenue, which includes sales taxes, was down $1.9 million from what the city had targeted
— Fines and forfeitures, down $73,175 from the fiscal year target
— Miscellaneous revenues down $135,801 from the fiscal year target
The largest short fall in revenue can be found in intergovernment revenue, which is the category where sale taxes are accounted for. In other words, spending accounted for in sales taxes on goods, services and activities was significantly down from what the city had projected.
