Carson High Students Named Scholastic Art and Writing Contest Winners for 2021

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Scholastic Art and Writing Contest winners from Carson High School.
Claire Williams, 17-year-old junior in Karen McCraw’s Art class, received a Gold Key award and an American Visions nomination for her piece, The Rise of Awareness.
Aubrey Glazner, 17-year-old senior in Kara Ferrin’s Photography class, received a Gold Key award and an American Visions nomination for her piece, Black in a White World.
Both will advance to the national level of the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest.
Karen McCraw’s Art class winners included: Gold Key winner Claire Williams; Silver Key winner Abigail Ruelas; and Honorable Mentions went to Laura Bennet, Erin Bourcier, Rachel Bush, Sophia Critterden, Victoria Dao, Alan Gomez Jaurgeui, Mady Peachay and Austin Shim.
Patricia Ababio’s Graphic Design student winners included: Silver Key winners Samuel Guerra and Alan Rodriguez; and Honorable Mentions went to Elena Brugger, Aiden Grime, Yaritza Hernandez, Leonardo Martinez, Elias Palumbo and Morigan Ruffner.
Alisa Kuniya’s Ceramics student winners included: Gold Key winner Morigan Ruffner; Silver Key winners Kora Ashton, Nicholas Dagbay and Shelby Wickstead; Honorable Mentions went to Kora Ashton, Faith Bowman, Taylor Garcia, Emiliano Gutierrez, Aiko Ruelan, Abigail Ruelas and Lesly Vargas.
Kara Ferrin’s Photography student winners included: Gold Key winners Jennifer Acosta, Madeline Fontaine, Delani Gill, Aubrey Glazner, Collin Hutson; Silver Key winners Jennifer Acosta, Ian Bowman, Aubrey Glazner, Collin Hutson, Sam Nichols and Grace Turner; Honorable Mentions went to Jennifer Acosta, Sam Dalton, Megan Finnerty, Delani Gill, Aubrey Glazner, Kianna Hettrick, Collin Hutson, Sam Nichols, Grace Turner, Amanda Salas and Devanie Woodward.
American Vision nominees work was exhibited at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, Feb. 5-25. Gold Key Winners work was on Exhibit at the Church Fine Arts Building at the University of Nevada, Reno from Feb. 5-25. The Gold/Silver/Honorable Mention slideshow was shown at NV Museum of Art. Silver and Gold Key winners were also invited to attend an awards ceremony Feb. 10.
Mss. Karen McCraw, Alisa Kuniya and Kara Ferrin were all honored during the awards ceremony at UNR put on by Scholastic Awards.
“It was a beautiful evening full of celebration of the creative endeavors of our creative and innovative students,” Karen McCraw said of the ceremony. “I sincerely celebrate the arts and appreciate that our community does as well. Our students have worked hard and most certainly deserve to be commended by our community.”
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards were founded in 1923 and, for nearly a century, have inspired bold ideas in creative teens throughout the country. Entries are selected for awards by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts without knowledge of the student’s gender, age, ethnicity or hometown. Jurors look for works that exemplify the Awards’ core values: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. More information available at artandwriting.org.
