Carson City deputies find more than 100 prescription pills in baggies after DUI stop

A 43-year-old man was arrested late Friday near the intersection of Carson and Robinson streets for felony possession of controlled substances and other charges after more than 100 prescription pills were found in baggies inside the man's vehicle, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Jonathan Thel Hooks III of Kirkwood, Calif., also faces charges of gross misdemeanor possession of a prescription drug without a prescription, misdemeanor driving under the influence and a red light violation.

According to the arrest report, Hooks was pulled over after running a red light going southbound Carson Street at Robinson Street.

“He drove through the red like it was green, and made no attempt to stop,” a Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputy said.

According to the arrest report, Hooks was very slow to respond and provided a credit card when asked for his driver’s license. A CCSO deputy said he could smell an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, there was a marijuana pipe in plain view on the passenger seat and Hooks had severe cotton mouth — white foaming at the corners of his mouth and edges of the tongue.

Hooks participated in various field sobriety tests and showed impairment before being detained and was arrested at 11:38 p.m.

Consent for an evidentiary blood draw was requested as the deputy suspected a controlled substance was involved and Hooks respectfully requested deputies to obtain a search warrant. The warrant was requested and granted, the arrest report states.

During the inventory of the vehicle, deputies located 99 tablets identified as Xanax in a baggie in the center console, one green Alprazolam 2 mg and several halves of suspected Xanax or Alprazolam pills, a CCSO deputy states. Total bail: $6,234.

In other bookings:
— A 44-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, 7:46 p.m., in the 1400 block of E. William Street for felony suspicion of driving under the influence with prior felony DUI and misdemeanor open container.

A CCSO deputy located a vehicle reported by an off-duty officer as a possible DUI driver, later identified as Jeffrey Scott Johnston and conducted a traffic stop, the arrest report states.

Upon contact, a CCSO deputy states he reportedly smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle and observed an open container. Johnston agreed to participate in standardized field sobriety testing and he failed to complete the tests satisfactorily and showed significant signs of impairment, a CCSO deputy said.

Johnston stated he had a drink at home and another while driving and provided a preliminary breath test with a result of 0.129 percent BAC. Total bail: $20,192.

— A 19-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, 4:14 p.m., in the 20 block of College Parkway for suspicion of misdemeanor possession of stolen property.

The reporting party stated in the arrest report that the license plate was stolen from his trailer in the parking lot an apartment complex. He later noticed the license plate installed on the back of a vehicle parked only a few spaces away from his trailer.

A CCSO deputy identified an apartment that was leased to the same person as the surrendered registration. When the deputy made contact with the suspect and was asked about the license plate the suspect dropped his head down and said, “I knew that was a bad idea,” according to the arrest report.

The suspect repeatedly claimed that a friend gave him the license plate and that he had no idea where it came from, the arrest report states. Bail: $637.

— A 51-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday, 11:46 p.m., at a North Carson Street motel for misdemeanor domestic battery first offense, battery on a police officer, and obstructing.

According to the arrest report, CCSO deputies met with the male suspect and a female victim. Both appeared highly intoxicated and the female was bleeding from the back of her head. They were both sitting outside their open motel door. At the threshold of the doorway were several pools of blood.

A deputy states in the report that the victim was asked about what happened and that the suspect would interrupt, answer for her, and not allow her to speak. When the suspect was asked to be quiet so the deputies could investigate why she was bleeding the suspect became upset, raised his voice and challenged why deputies were speaking to him.

According to the arrest report, deputies from the previous shift had responded to the same location, but didn’t make any arrests. In the previous call the suspect had also been uncooperative and this time, due to the suspects aggressive behavior, they decided to frisk the suspect for weapons.

After refusing several orders to stand up to be be searched for weapons he finally stood up. Instead of complying though, the suspect squared his body to a deputy, took a fighting stance and then stepped toward him aggressively, the report states.

The deputy said he believed the suspect was going to fight him so he forcibly moved the suspect against a wall when the deputies took control of the suspect and detained him.

According to the arrest report, the victim said she had been arguing with the suspect for most of the evening and at one point when she decided to take a bottle of alcohol away from him he became upset and they fought.

The victim would not be more descriptive about what “fought” meant and stated she did not know what happened to her head.

She stated she had tripped and fallen over her shoe laces, but was wearing boots without laces. She did, however, ask for a domestic abuse information card given to victims of domestic violence, the arrest report states.

During intake, the suspect became visibly agitated and continually told a deputy he would kick the deputy's ass if he would take his badge off, the report states.

He also threw a pair of sunglasses intently behind him allegedly aware of the deputies location in the room and made other utterances such as calling the deputy "cute" and a "cowboy," the report states. Total bail: $4,911.
