Carson City man identified in fatal crash Thursday night on Interstate 580

A 57 year-old Carson City man has been identified as the fatality in Thursday night's multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 580 just south of the Galena Creek Bridge.
Philip Dale Hatley of Carson City was killed after he had exited his vehicle and was struck by another that had lost control on the freeway.
On Thursday February 14, 2019 at approximately 5:45 p.m., NHP Troopers were dispatched to a serious injury crash on Interstate 580 south of the Galena Creek Bridge (mile marker 10 in Washoe County).
Preliminary investigation shows that a dark grey Chevrolet pickup was traveling northbound on I-580, south of the Galena Creek Bridge. A white Chevrolet Suburban SUV was traveling northbound, directly behind the Chevrolet pickup. The pickup was being driven by a female and the Suburban was being driven by her husband.
The driver of the Chevrolet pickup lost control and rotated, coming to rest against the outside guardrail facing southbound. The husband in the white Suburban proceeded past the crash and stopped on the outside shoulder. He then backed up to a distance of approximately 100 feet north of the pickup.
The male driver exited the Suburban and began walking back to his wife in the pickup truck when a northbound black Chrysler 200 sedan lost control and struck the husband.
The Chrysler continued northbound, striking the inside shoulder wall and coming to rest. Unfortunately, the driver of the Suburban (Philip Dale Hatley, 57 year-old Carson City resident) succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Within moments of the initial crash, six separate crashes occurred south of the scene, causing all northbound lanes of I-580 to be shut down.
Northbound I-580 was closed at the US395 Alternate/Bowers Mansion exit. Traffic was diverted onto US 395 Alternate until the roadway was reopened at 10:15 PM.
