Learn about Alzheimer’s Disease at the Next Rotary Club of Carson City Meeting

Alzheimer’s and gerontology expert Heidi Slater will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting.

The virtual event takes place Tuesday, February 2nd at 12:30 P.M.

Slater is a Family Care Associate for the Northern California/Northern Nevada chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Slater’s presentation will include the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

“We will also explore age-related changes, importance of early detection and benefits of diagnosis, as well as Alzheimer’s Association resources” she said. “We will also discuss how to talk with someone about memory concerns, which can be difficult.”

Slater earned a certificate in Gerontology from the University of Nevada, Reno; a Master's in Education with a librarianship specialty from Portland State University, and a Bachelors of History from Yale University.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its 18th annual Extreme Motor Officers Challenge this Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 9-11 at Mills Park. This event is open to current certified motor officers and skilled civilians.

The event will include training, riding and riding techniques with various instructors. This event is designed to help enhance their riding skills through challenging patterns with and friendly competition.

On Tuesday night, a fire was reportedly burning at the Carson City Dump, located off of Flint Road near Mound House just before 9 p.m.

Firefighters are on scene currently fighting the blaze.

Residents are urged to avoid the area, and use caution on Highway 50.

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021 at about 3:20 a.m. the Carson City Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of North Carson Street and Hot Springs Road to investigate a reported shooting between two vehicles traveling southbound on Carson Street.

More evacuations orders were lifted Tuesday near South Lake Tahoe for El Dorado county neighborhoods from Al Tahoe Boulevard to just east of Elks Club Drive as firefighting efforts continue. The Caldor Fire was 49 percent contained and mapped at 216,646 acres, according to Cal Fire in a Tuesday morning report.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Monday afternoon to a vehicle crash with injuries on College Parkway near 20 College Parkway.

Firefighters on the Caldor Fire near South Lake Tahoe continued to work tirelessly throughout the night Sunday into Monday morning, patrolling and holding the fire at current perimeters. Crews continued the aggressive direct attack, mop up, and building upon previously constructed hand line.

Firefighting efforts continue along the lines of the Dixie Fire near Susanville, which was mapped Monday morning at 910,495 acres and is 57 percent contained.
