Smokey Bear missing at top of US-50 Spooner near Lake Tahoe, Forest Service wants him found
U.S. Forest Service fire prevention officers discovered earlier this week that the Smokey Bear fire danger sign on US-50 West near the top of Spooner Summit had been vandalized and the iconic bear missing.
The fire danger signs are strategically placed along highways around Lake Tahoe to alert the public to the current fire danger rating.
The Forest Service is asking the public to spread the word about the recent theft, noting the US-50 West highway over Spooner Summit into the Lake Tahoe Basin is a well-traveled roadway. The Forest Service says it is hoping someone saw something that will help the agency recover Smokey.
Motorists and travelers who may have saw anything suspicious or out of place, should call the front U.S. Forest Service desk at 530-543-2600 or email them at sm.fs.paltbmu@usda.gov to help them bring Smokey Bear home.
