High winds prompt advisory for Carson City, surrounding counties ahead of winter storm
Gusty winds ahead of a winter storm has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a wind advisory Tuesday through early Wednesday morning for Carson City and surrounding counties.
Forecasters advise gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are likely with gusts up to 60 mph in wind prone areas along US-395 and I-580.
The advisory is for the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas and runs until 4 a.m. Wednesday. Forecasters said people should secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, holiday decorations and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away.
The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage, the weather service advises.
Meanwhile, a winter storm is expected to arrive later overnight through Wednesday with a winter weather advisory for Carson City and surrounding counties and a winter storm warning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. See NVroads.com or call 511 for the latest travel conditions.
