COVID-19 Weekly Update: Over half of Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County are now vaccinated; Storey numbers remain low

Throughout the Quad Counties, Carson City leads in a new daily confirmed case average with 31 new daily cases on average. Douglas County leads in test positivity rate, with 18.8 percent of all tests returning positive. Carson City leads in initiated vaccinations at 70 percent of the population aged 5 and over, followed closely by Douglas County at 61 percent.

CASES

— Statewide, there is a 2,658 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last 30 days, there have been 1,539 confirmed cases per 100,000. This does not mean that 1,539 cases have been confirmed, but rather, it is a tool used to determine which counties are more at risk by bringing everything level to the 100,000 equivalent.

As of Jan. 8, there have been 509,472 total confirmed cases statewide.

— In Carson City, there is a 31 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last thirty days, there have been 961 confirmed cases per 100,000.

As of Jan. 8, there have been 9,925 total confirmed cases in Carson City.

— In Douglas County, there is a 15 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last 30 days, there have been 640 confirmed cases per 100,000.

As of Jan. 8, there have been 5,460 total confirmed cases in Douglas County.

— In Lyon County, there is a 15 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last 30 days, there have been 572 confirmed cases per 100,000.

As of Jan. 8, there have been 7,587 total confirmed cases in Lyon County.

— In Storey County, there is a 0 new daily confirmed case average for the prior 14 days.

Within the last 30 days, there have been 143 confirmed cases per 100,000.

As of Jan. 8, there have been 242 total confirmed cases in Storey County.

TESTING

— Statewide, every county except Storey County and Eureka County have been reporting over 80 daily tests within a 14 day period with a 7 day lag.

There is a statewide positivity rate of 23.5 percent across a 14 day period with a 7 day lag. What that means is that out of all the tests being taken, 23.5 percent of them are returning positive.

As of Jan. 8, over 6 million tests have been completed.

— In Carson City, there is a 334 daily tests per 100,000 average with a 12 percent test positivity rate. Over 137,000 tests have been performed total. This is the highest test positivity rate in recent weeks.

— In Douglas County, there is a 178 daily tests per 100,000 average with an 18.8 percent test positivity rate. Over 48,000 tests have been performed total. This is the highest test positivity rate in recent weeks.

— In Lyon County, there is a 159 daily tests per 100,000 average with a 15 percent test positivity rate. Nearly 62,000 tests have been performed total. This is the highest test positivity rate in recent weeks.

— In Storey County, there is a 34 daily tests per 100,000 average with a 20 percent test positivity rate. 1,169 total tests have been performed. The highest test positivity rate was at 21.1 percent on Jan. 5.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

— Statewide, there are currently 1,188 confirmed COVID hospitalizations and 138 suspected hospitalizations. 218 patients are in the ICU and 123 ventilators are in use.

— In Carson City, there are currently 26 confirmed COVID hospitalizations, and 2 suspected hospitalizations. 1 patient is in the ICU and 1 ventilator is in use.

— In Douglas County, there are currently 4 confirmed COVID hospitalizations and 0 suspected hospitalizations. 1 patient is in the ICU and 0 ventilators are in use.

— In Lyon County, there are currently 3 confirmed COVID hospitalizations and 1 suspected hospitalization. 0 patients are in the ICU and 0 ventilators are in use.

— In Storey County, there are no current COVID hospitalizations.

DEATHS

— Statewide, there have been an average of 5 new daily deaths over the past 14 days, and 7 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days.

As of Jan. 8, a total of 8,510 Nevadans have died from COVID-19.

— In Carson City, there have been 9 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days. A total of 184 Carson City residents have died from COVID-19 as of Jan. 8.

— In Douglas County, there have been 2 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days. A total of 75 Douglas County residents have died from COVID-19 as of Jan. 8.

— In Lyon County, there have been 7 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days. A total of 140 Lyon County residents have died from COVID-19 as of Jan. 8.

— In Storey County, there have been 0 deaths per 100,000 over the last 30 days. A total of 8 Storey County residents have died from COVID-19 as of Jan. 8.

VACCINATIONS

— Statewide, over 4 million total doses have been administered. Nearly 2 million vaccinations have been reported as initiated, which is 64.94 percent of the population aged 5 and over. 1.6 million vaccinations have been completed, which is 54.79 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

— In Carson City, 38,505 total vaccinations have been initiated, which is over 70 percent of the population aged 5 and over. Over 34,000 total vaccinations have been reported as completed, which is 63.20 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

— In Douglas County, over 29,000 vaccinations have been initiated, which is 61.84 percent of the population aged 5 and over. Over 26,000 vaccinations have been reported as completed, which is 55.12 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

— In Lyon County, nearly 32,000 vaccinations have been reported as initiated, which is 57.27 percent of the population aged 5 and over. Over 28,000 vaccinations have been reported as completed, which is 51.09 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

— In Storey County, 983 vaccinations have been reported as initiated, which is 24.09 percent of the population aged 5 and over. 886 vaccinations have been reported as completed, which is 21 percent of the population aged 5 and over.

DEMOGRAPHICS

As of Jan. 8, more women are receiving the vaccination then men at 52.2 percent versus 47.8 percent, respectively.

Vaccination rates throughout the ages are equally spread between the 20-70+ age groups, from 13 to 15 percent. The smallest group of initiated vaccinations are within the 5-11 age group, which makes up 2.2 percent of total vaccinations.

Those who identify as non-hispanic white lead in vaccinations at 36.8 percent of total vaccinations, which is less than the total population at 49 percent.

Those who identify as hispanic are in second place with 27 percent of total vaccinations initiated, fairly equal with the population percent of 30 percent.

Those who identify as non-hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native have the smallest group of initiated vaccines, with only 0.6 percent of total vaccinations initiated, slightly less than the 1.1 percent of the population total.

COUNTY TRACKER

Counties are flagged for elevated disease transmission if they meet two of the three criteria of:
An average number of tests per day of less than 100
A case rate of over 200
A case rate of over 50 and a test positivity rate of over 8 percent

— Carson City has two current flags, one for case rate per 100,000 for the last 30 days at 979, and a test positivity rate of 12 percent.

— Douglas County has two current flags, one for case rate per 100,000 for the last 30 days at 688, and a test positivity rate of 18.8 percent.

— Lyon County has two current flags, one for case rate per 100,000 for the last 30 days at 589, and a test positivity rate of 15 percent.

— Story County has one flag, for performing only an average of 34 tests per day per 100,000. Only Storey County and Eureka County have been flagged for failing to meet the 100 tests per day per 100,000 criteria.

The unpredictability of spring this first weekend of May continues with the threat of snow showers in the Sierra on Saturday, along with gusty winds and rain down to the valley floors for Carson City and surrounding areas. The storm system should moved out by Sunday morning.

Carson City’s former Board of Supervisor and business owner Stan Jones was posthumously awarded Thursday the Historic Preservation Award for his long time work for downtown Carson City.

Each year, a Historic Preservation Award is awarded by the Historic Resources Commission to Carson City residents or organizations who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to historic preservation.

The Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is today, Thursday, May 2 at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. The memorial brings hundreds to the capitol grounds. The ceremony begins at 1 p.m.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three for their alleged involvement in business thefts last month on Topsy Lane south of Carson City.

The national issue of suicide — particularly among veterans — touched many people who attended the Walk for Hope on Wednesday morning at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

The new renovations at the Carson City Senior Center opened the opportunity to host art shows to extend enrichment to the senior community. Carson City Senior Center presents “Geographical Divides: Finding Common Ground,” featuring 16 artists who were asked to explore the geographical and cultural differences in Nevada, if such differences truly exist.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.
