Carson City residents to receive new streamlined recycling, green waste bins and a lower rate
Thanks to a negotiation between Waste Management and the Carson City Board of Supervisors, capital city residents will find a lowered rate for garbage collection, with additional carts for single stream recycling and green waste such as non-food organics and plant matter.
According to Waste Management, they are investing $6.75 million in new carts and trucks in order to provide these new services.
Additionally, curbside holiday tree collection will be included in the base service rate from Dec. 25 through Jan. 15.
For qualified low-income households, a 25 percent discount to the base rate can also be applied.
The new service rates are $17.59 per month, a $3.17 reduction in the current rate.
However, the new program does not take effect until July 1, 2019 and customers should watch for mailings from Waste Management, which will provide more details.
Services have also been updated for customers, with the biggest changes being the implementation of a local help desk that people can either call at (775) 343-7596, or stop by and speak to someone in person at 5560 Sheep Drive.
This was a large complaint local customers had regarding Waste Management, as there was only a call center for residents to call previously.
The contract between Waste Management and the Board of Supervisors was approved on Dec. 20.
The contract is for a time period lasting 15 years, with the contract terminating on June 30, 2034.
