Letter: Carson City Sheriff's Office explores NHP substation concept
Several years ago Undersheriff Albertsen and I entertained a vision with representatives from the Nevada Highway Patrol regarding law enforcement services and unity in Carson City.
The core of the discussions centered on a concept of NHP having space available here at the Sheriff’s Office. Since then, discussions have been sporadic. However, as we entered into the new year, NHP Chief Troy Abney visited us here with a real interest in expanding the conversations into a real project. I have spoken with many employees here, both sworn and non-sworn, who like me have suggested our close relationships with NHP could only benefit from this. Similarly, I have received feedback from some at NHP that the feelings are similar on their side of the house.
I’d like everyone to grasp a vision of mine, one that is visionary only: Carson City law enforcement shift briefings, held in the patrol division briefing room at the regular intervals included all those officers who have the role and responsibility of protecting this community for the upcoming shift. That sharing of vital watch information, exchange of training expertise topics, and staffing knowledge between agencies is addressed to all in one setting at one time. This vision promotes a giant step toward creating greater efficiencies and communications in public safety. The beneficiary of this vision is our community residents and visitors.
As the Sheriff’s complex was designed, long before ground breaking, the building was expected to house over 150 employees, reserves and volunteers. It was also anticipated that our staffing would grow by a small percentage annually, thus sufficient design space was allocated to insure the complex could facilitate law enforcement services and needs well into the future. Contrary to design anticipations, our staffing has actually been reduced and the immediate economic recoveries are surely moving forward at a very slow pace. We have the space… and we share the responsibilities.
I am eager as this concept is being evaluated and considered for real implementation and hope that everyone here will recognize the benefits and embrace the project. We will keep everyone informed as the evaluations continue and the coordination evolves.
