Nevada State Museum Lecture: Early Prehistoric Textiles in the Western Great Basin
Ever wonder what people wore on their feet 13,000 years ago? A fascinating look at early prehistoric textiles in the Western Great Basin will be the theme of a Jan. 24 lecture presented by archaeologist Pat Barker beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City as part of its monthly Our Frances Humphrey Lecture Series.
Barker will discuss prehistoric textiles, showcasing sandals, mats, bags, basketry, and cordage from the collections of the Nevada State Museum. Learn how foot ware can inform us about how people lived in the past.
Discover ancient weaving styles and techniques that use natural materials such as Big Sagebrush, dogbane, tule, sedges, and grasses. The program will be of interest to anthropologists, Native Americans, textile artists, and the general public. *Artifacts may be available for viewing from 7:30 - 8:00 pm. Read more below in an excerpt from the 2013 winter issue of Mint Edition.
