Carson Tahoe Health picked to perform new therapy for Peripheral Artery Disease patients
Carson Tahoe Health is the first hospital in Nevada to offer the new Lutonix® 035 Drug Coated Balloon PTA Catheter (DCB), which is the first and only DCB approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This new therapy dramatically improves the long-term durability of angioplasty procedures and decreases the need for repeat procedures for those suffering from Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD).
PAD is a life-threatening condition that affects millions of Americans by narrowing arteries and reducing blood flow to the limbs, according to the American Heart Association. Patients with PAD are at a risk for lower-extremity amputation, particularly in people over the age of 50.
Prior to the new DCB treatment, PAD patients were typically treated with angioplasty balloons and stents, medications and bypass surgery. The medication used in the new DCB treatment prevents re-narrowing (usually due to a type of scar tissue) of the area of blockage once it has been opened with a balloon. This dramatically improves the effectiveness and longevity of the procedure and reduces the need for repeat treatments. Repeat procedures have long been a detriment to treating PAD, making the DCB treatment a major advancement in this field of treatment.
“Carson Tahoe Health takes pride in offering the newest and most advanced treatment to our community and patients, especially in the field of cardiovascular treatment,” said Dr. Stephen Tann, interventional cardiologist at Carson Tahoe Health. “We’ve had our eye on this technology for quite some time and believe that offering this advanced treatment will revolutionize the way we treat PAD.”
Early detection of PAD is crucial and screenings can be done with simple measurements of blood pressure in the arms and legs as well as non-invasive ultrasounds. Carson Tahoe Health recommends a consultation with a physician to determine eligibility for the new DCB procedure.
