Leisure Hour Club Recognizes Carson City Historical Society with Donation
The Carson City Leisure Hour Club recently donated $500 to the Carson City Historical Society. Accepting the check for the Society were President Gary Cain along with members Paula Cannon, Dona Spencer, Debbie Lane and Gary Yoakum. The presentation occurred at the Club’s dinner meeting on April 19.
In making the announcement, Leisure Hour Club President Dan Neverett, noted the purpose of the Carson City Historical Society is to collect, preserve and present the history of Carson City for research and educational purposes.
The Society’s long involvement with preserving the James Doane Roberts House is of special significance. Located on North Carson Street, this structure is a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture and was owned by James Doane Roberts, the co-owner of the Roberts and Corbett's Saloon (across the street from the V&T depot).
The house was constructed in Washoe City in 1859, and in 1873 was moved to its current Carson City location on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad and by oxen with logs. Subsequently, the property was ‘willed to the children of Nevada,’ and it became the property of Carson City.
The City’s Public Works Department planned to raze it to create a small park, but the outcry of the citizenry brought about the creation of the Nevada Landmark's Society (now the Carson City Historical Society) which enlisted the aid of the local citizens to save it. In 2016, the home was damaged by two cases of arson, and the Historical Society continues to raise funds to address the damage caused by the fires.
Community members and organizations interested in supporting the historic Roberts House restoration can submit donations to assist in the Society’s "recovery efforts" to CCHS at 112 N. Curry St, Carson City, NV 89703, or if interested in becoming involved in the Historical Society, check the group’s webpage - http://cchistorical.org/.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. Continuing to celebrate its 121st year, the organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.
