The Carson Fly Club will hold its regular monthly meeting on the first Wednesday of the month, May 4 at 7 p.m.
That meeting will be held at Fire Station No. 01 on Stewart Street.
Anyone interested in the sport of fly fishing or fly tying is invited to attend the club meetings and functions.

Hobart Reservoir, a small, high-mountain reservoir, located at an elevation of 7,600 feet in the mountains between Carson City and Lake Tahoe, will open for the 2011 fishing season on May 1.
Because of its high elevation and location, this reservoir is normally covered with ice, and surrounded by deep snow drifts, when it opens on May 1.

It will remain open to fishing through September 30.

This is a reminder that the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) will be conducting prescribed burns at Tunnel Creek in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park backcountry throughout late April and into May.

The Tunnel Creek road, from State Route 28 to Tunnel Creek Station, may be closed in order to conduct the burns.
Signs will be posted throughout the area when burns are being conducted.

Nearly 100 acres will be treated in 15 separate phases.

Sometimes you never know what a kid will remember from a fishing trip.
Fifth grader Kepa Bengochea loves going fly fishing with her grandfather Steve Swecker. On one fishing trip she remembers fishing next to a huge tree. Throughout the day, she would sit and lean against the tree.
So when her fifth grade class at French Ford Middle School in Winnemucca began drawing their entries for this year’s Free Fishing Day Poster Contest, she incorporated that tree into her drawing.

The Carson City Shade Tree Council will host its annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 29. The hour-long celebration will be held at Governors’ Field (behind Lowe’s) and will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Among those attending will be Smokey Bear who will help the Council plant the Northern Red Maple selected by the staff of Carson City’s Park and Recreation Department. The tree planting is scheduled at 6 p.m. The Council paid for the tree with money it raised at annual Fall Tree Care Seminar.

OK Gang, it’s almost time to have fun in the High Sierras once again. In just 10 days on April 30, the 2011 fishing season will open for applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California, plus all of the applicable waters in Inyo and Mono Counties. That season will then remain open until Tuesday, Nov. 15.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:

The Brown Bite Continues! More Browns are beginning to move in to areas along the east shore following the Pond Smelt.
On recent trips we have seen pretty solid numbers of Browns, some days having to cover more water than on others, but the fish are there.

The Clear Creek Bowmen, an archery organization in Carson City, will hold a fund raising, archery shoot on Sunday, May 8.

That shoot will be held at the Centennial Park Archery Range (east of the Eagle Valley Golf Course), just off U.S. 50.
Driving directions to the Archery Range from the intersection of U.S. 395 and U.S. 50 in Carson City: Drive four miles east on U.S. 50 (go past the Deer Run Road Intersection). Turn left at the Added Storage Building and drive north until the road ends. Turn right at the Archery Range sign and look for the green building.

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) recommends that people not handle any young wild animals they see in the outdoors.

The improper handling of young wildlife is a problem in California and across the nation, most commonly in the spring, when many species are caring for their offspring.
People frequently encounter young wild animals they think need assistance or have been orphaned. However, in most cases neither assumption is true and the animals should be left alone.

Here is a list of the most recent fish plants in the western part of the Silver State done by the Nevada Division of Wildlife:

April 11: West Walker River in Lyon County: 2,009 rainbow trout: 10.1 inches in length.
April 12: Wilson Common Pond in Washoe Valley: 499 rainbow trout: 10.1 inches in length.
April 12: Davis Creek Pond in Washoe Valley: 504 rainbows: 10.5 inches.
April 12: Liberty Pond in Churchill County: 672 rainbows: 10.1 inches.

In late March, Donald Lee Scarrow Jr. and Roger Lynn Sievers, entered a plea agreement for one count each of unlawful possession of big game animal (mule Deer), a gross misdemeanor as defined by NRS 501.376(4) and NRS 501.376 (5).

The two men had 2009 mule deer tags for hunt units 071-079,091.

A picture was obtained by Idaho Game and Fish of Scarrow posing with the Trophy class mule deer buck that he had harvested.

One of the great features of the Shasta Cascade region of Northern California is its natural beauty and cascading waterfalls.
Thanks to an abundance of rain and snow fall, many of the waterfalls are roaring this season. They are best seen during early spring to late summer, with some flowing year-round.

The return of spring signals the return of osprey from their wintering grounds in Central America.
The Salmon River corridor from North Fork to Stanley supports about 40 nesting pairs of these large brown and white birds of prey.

As they are in much of the state, most of their nests are built on artificial nesting structures, which provide the visibility, security from predators, and proximity to water that ospreys need.

The first tiger muskies ever raised in Utah will soon be swimming in six waters in the state.
Fertilizing the eggs from a Northern pike with milt from a true muskie creates a huge fish called a tiger muskie.
The tigers will be only two to three inches long when they're released. But they won't stay that size for long.

As part of the Carson Ranger District Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project, U.S. Forest Service fire crews will begin prescribed fire burning operations near Pleasant Valley Road, Hot Springs Road, and Grover’s Hot Spring State Park in the Markleeville area, located in Alpine County Calif., beginning around April 21, through May 21, weather and fuel conditions permitting.

Mark your calendars for April 24-26 for the highly-popular John Riordan Invitational Fishing Derby. John is the Assistant General Manager for the Carson Station Hotel and Casino in Carson City, and this will be the 14th version of his annual, fun-filled, fishing event at Topaz Lake.
His derby is traditionally co-headquartered at the Topaz Lake Marina and the Topaz Lake Lodge at Topaz Lake, which lies along the Nevada-California state line about 40 miles south of Carson City.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has recently completed several fish plants in the northern and western part of the state. Here are the latest plants:
April 5: Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe: 4,244 rainbow trout: 10.1 inches.
April 5: Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe: 2,091 rainbows, 10.1 inches.
April 6: Squaw Creek Reservoir in Northern Washoe County; 3,036 rainbows: 10.0 inches.
April 6: Mountain View Park in Lyon County: 468 rainbows, 10.0 inches.
April 8: Topaz Lake: 6,780 rainbow fingerings: 5.0 inches.

This is a reminder that the Ormsby Sportsmen’s Association (OSA), a local sportsmen’s club for hunters and fishermen will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, April 19 in the conference room at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at 911 East Musser Street at 6:30 p.m.

CARSON CITY — This is a final reminder that if you're one of many tens of thousands of big game hunters interested in drawing a 2011 hunting tag.

The drawing is for Pronghorn Antelope, Mule Deer, California Bighorn Sheep, Desert (Nelson) Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mountain Elk and Rocky Mountain Goat in the State of Nevada, be advised that the final deadline for RECEIVING your application(s) is 5 p.m. on Monday, April 18.

The drawing results will be made available to the public by June 13. If you want to apply, you can do so by one of two different methods:

Thanks to grant funding provided by Inyo County, the Chamber has contracted with Inland Aquaculture to purchase and plant specially tagged Alpers Trout in Pleasant Valley Reservoir and Lower Owens River.
