A cold front is expected to produce gusty winds Wednesday into Thursday prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Wind Advisory for the Sierra Front, Western Nevada Basin and Range and Northern Washoe County with a Lake Wind Advisory for Tahoe and Pyramid Lake.

As the front moves into the region, the Weather Service has also issued a Freeze Watch from 11 p.m. Thursday through 9 a.m. Friday for the greater Carson City and Carson Valley areas, south Lyon and Mineral counties and the greater Reno area.

The forecast calls for southwest winds 20 mph to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with wave heights of 2 to 4 feet for Pyramid Lake and 1 to 3 feet at Lake Tahoe.

The Wind Advisory, is from 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon to 7 a.m. Thursday. The Freeze Watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday morning.

Forecasters advise gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects and tree limbs, which could cause some power outages. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve. Blowing dust downwind of desert sinks may reduce visibilities.

For the Freeze Watch, sub-freezing temperatures with lows 21 to 28 are expected Friday morning. Sub-freezing temperatures with lows 26 to 30 degrees are expected Friday morning. Outside of urban areas, sub-freezing temperatures with lows 20 to 25.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. The weather service advises to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent water pipes from freezing, it is advised to wrap or drain or allow them to drip slowly.
