Second and third-grade students at Fremont Elementary School in Carson City recently learned how to save energy and protect natural resources through an engaging and interactive live performance of “The Wattage of Oz,” presented by Bright Star Theatre and NV Energy.
The theatrical performance reimagines the classic story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, transforming it into a fun and educational lesson about electricity and energy conservation. Through music, humor and audience participation, students followed familiar characters on a journey to discover how small actions can make a big difference in saving energy at home and at school.

During the show, students learned simple ways to reduce energy use, such as turning off lights when leaving a room, unplugging electronics when they are not in use and using energy-efficient appliances. The performance also highlighted how electricity is generated and why conserving energy helps protect the environment.
The presentation was designed specifically for elementary students, using storytelling and interactive moments to help reinforce energy-saving habits in a way that is both memorable and easy to understand.
“Programs like these help students see that they can play an important role in saving energy,” said Dr. Jennifer Ward, principal of Fremont Elementary School. “By making the lesson fun and engaging, students leave with practical ideas they can use every day.”
Students were encouraged to take what they learned home and share energy-saving tips with their families, extending the impact of the program beyond the classroom, Dr. Ward continued. The performance was both entertaining and informative, leaving students energized about doing their part to conserve energy.

The performance is part of NV Energy’s ongoing commitment to education and community outreach. By bringing programs like “The Wattage of Oz” to schools, the company helps students better understand how energy works and how everyday choices can contribute to a more sustainable future.
