The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the western Nevada Sierra Front including Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno areas, Lake Tahoe Basin and Mono County through 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

Wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph can be expected on Sierra and far western Nevada valleys with gusts up to 65 mph along wind-prone locations. Wave heights of 2 to 5 feet are likely at Lake Tahoe. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing in the lake.

Flooding potential persists with this weak atmospheric river event, however flooding chances remain low, according to the weather service.

Total rain amounts for this system through Wednesday afternoon amount to 1.5 to 2.0 inches along the Sierra crest, decreasing to 0.5-1.0 inch in the Tahoe Basin at lake level and then becoming shadowed along the Sierra Front and eastern Sierra in Mono County with a 50 to 60 percent chance of 0.20 of an inch or more, NWS forecasters said.

Based on the dynamics of this storm and the direction of the upper level winds, forecasters expect Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno to see less than 0.05 of of rain out of the system, though there’s always the chance for more spillover, forecasters said.

Above 10,000 feet, however, the Tahoe Basin southward into Alpine and Mono counties, snow accumulations of up to 6 inches are likely. Higher amounts of 6-12 inches are focused around the peaks surrounding Tioga Pass.
