UDPATE: According to Lyon County Sheriff Brad Pope, the elderly man who was rescued from being trapped in a burning building Friday morning is suspected to have started the fire himself.

This morning, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies reported seeing smoke coming from the corner of Grosh Avenue and Flowery Avenue in Dayton. Upon arriving at the location, Lyon County Deputies rescued a man laying inside of a fully involved residential fire.

Lyon County Deputies had originally observed smoke in the area of the corner of Grosh Avenue and Flowery Avenue. Dispatch began receiving multiple calls of a structure fire at that location. Deputies immediately responded and were advised a male subject, later identified as Jack Randell, was inside the residence. Reports were that Randell had caused the fire due to an ongoing dispute with his spouse.

Deputies immediately entered the residence and were confronted by large amounts of smoke and fire. One of the deputies and a civilian, on scene, helped to drag Randell from the residence to safety.

Randell had sustained moderate to severe burns and was flown to UC Davis. The deputy and citizens on scene sustained very minor injuries and were treated on scene.

At this time, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the incident. Further questions or details should be referred to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
