At their May meeting, Brian Crane will join Leisure Hour Club members to help celebrate the 35th anniversary of the debut of the comic strip “Pickles” in April 1990.

His comments will provide the group with a little peek behind the curtains of how he creates Pickles, how he got started, and where he gets his ideas for this nationally recognized comic strip.

Crane’s Pickles is a daily comic strip featuring Earl and Opal Pickles, who have been married for over 50 years. It shows the funny side of family and friendships.

Soon after Pickles’ debut in 1990, Crane “retired” as an art director for an advertising agency in Reno, Nevada, to devote his full attention to his comic strip.

The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization.

The organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.

Its motto of “Let knowledge grow from more to more” comes from Tennyson’s poem In Memoriam.

Information on joining the organization or on reservations for the Thursday, May 15 dinner/meeting can be obtained by calling 775.302.8820 or by email to lhcreservations@gmail.com.
