With the recent grand opening of the Cellar 8 Wine Bar, which held a ribbon cutting on Saturday, comes another announcement: coming soon will be the Press Cafe by Cellar 8.

The last time a sit-in coffee shop opened in Carson City was Old World Coffee Lab in the back of the Union in 2019. Since then, Larry’s Gourmet Coffee took up residence in the old Carson Coffee in 2023, but it functions more as a drive-thru or walk in rather than a sit-down.

But now, Press Cafe will be filling the void left by Java Joe’s in central downtown which, if anyone remembers, closed nearly twenty years ago.

Artisan Cafe closed in 2020 and Comma Coffee is still operating after decades, but the location of both are at the south end of downtown.

Press Cafe will be taking up residence within the Cellar 8 Wine Bar at 408 N. Carson Street.

Owner Maxine “Max” Holland said the coffee shop revamp is ready to go, but staff training will be complete at the end of the month.

“We are serving Laughing Cat Coffee, a wonderful local Reno roaster,” Holland said. “We will have small breakfast pastries from a local baker and delicious bagels. Eventually we will have grab and go salads and sandwiches too – but one step at a time.”

The coffee shop will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. within the wine bar with a tentative opening date of March 20.

Holland said they’ve already started a book club, and will be hosting multiple events based around coffee within the cafe.

Stay tuned for more information. The Cellar 8 website is currently being updated, and will contain even more information about the staff, operations, and future events.
