UPDATE 4PM: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe has released a preliminary report on Monday morning’s crash on SR89 near the intersection with SR88 at Pickett’s Junction. At the time of the crash, the roads were very icy after overnight rain and freezing temperatures.

The report says, that due to the icy conditions, the driver of a northbound Chevy Tahoe was driving at an unsafe speed, lost control, and crossed into the southbound lane in the path of a Mazda. 

Two adults from the Mazda and two adults and two juveniles from the Chevy were transported to the hospital. A third juvenile in the Chevy was not injured.

UPDATE 12:40PM: Here’s the latest from the California Highway Patrol on a crash that happened Monday morning near Hope Valley.

At approximately 8:15 a.m. on Monday, a Chevy Tahoe was traveling north on California State Route 89 as a Mazda was traveling southbound near what is known as Bunkhouse Curve.

For reasons still under investigation, the two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in five major injuries and two minor injuries. At this time, no further information is available.

Emergency crews responded Monday morning to a head-on crash at California State Route 89 and SR-88, resulting in the roadway’s closure.

According to early reports from California Highway Patrol, at approximately 8:18 a.m., vehicles collided near Pickett’s Junction, 15 miles west of Gardnerville. There have been seven injuries and Care Flight has landed for some of the patients.

The road remained closed as of 9:55 a.m. Check with Caltrans QuickMap here for updates as to when the road opens.

Roadways in the Sierra are icy Monday due to overnight rain. Accidents have been reported over Echo Summit, Kingsbury Grade and a second crash on SR-88 at Snowshoe Springs Road west of Woodfords, which resulted in minor injuries.
