With a fourth year of drought and spring temperatures climbing, Carson City residents are urged to be fire safe. May is Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month and as conditions continue to dry, and the number of windy days begin to increase, the potential threat of wildfire grows.

Protecting your home starts with you. The wildfire season is here. This Saturday and Sunday, the Carson City Fire Department will hold two events designed for homeowners to prepare for the season.

There will be a Community Open House, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in the parking lot of Western Nevada College across from Fire Station 54. Interact with Fire Department personnel, review firefighting equipment, visit the Fire Safety Trailer and see what programs are available to assist in preparing for wildfire. Learn about personal family preparedness from our Community Emergency Response Team.

There will be a Fuels Reduction Walking Tour Sunday open to the public. Meet at the West end of Hobart Road 10 a.m. This is a walking tour to learn about what leads to an accumulation of hazardous fuels, what is being done to mitigate those hazards and what are the environmental impacts. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes for a hike and bring drinking water.

Carson City encourages you to “Improve Your Odds – Prepare For Wildfire.” Take personal responsibility and prepare before the threat of a wildfire so you and your home are ready. Create defensible space by clearing brush, trim and remove tall, dry grasses, and remove low lying tree limbs away from your home. Use fire-resistant landscaping and don’t forget to make a list and assemble emergency supplies and belongings and store them in a safe place.
