With just a few hours of 2016 remaining on the West Coast, arguably the world’s largest New Year’s Eve bash in New York City’s Times Square culminated at 9 p.m. Pacific Standard Time with the real time midnight ball drop watched by guests at the Carson Plaza Hotel Events Center Saturday night in Carson City.
Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell led party-goers with a champagne toast to usher in 2017 as the new year began in Manhattan.
Dozens were in attendance for this year’s New York New Year’s Eve Black and White Ball hosted by the Friends of the Carson City Library (FCCL).
The annual event is a fundraiser to help the library purchase upgraded equipment and support community programs in the new year. It’s the largest fundraiser of the year for the Carson City Library.
“We’re continuing to grow and do bigger things because of all of you,” Carson City Library Sena Loyd said to the crowd.
Proceeds from the New Year’s Eve gala this year will go toward purchasing a mobile, bicycle-powered library on wheels in 2017, said FCCL Vice President and evening emcee Joe Spencer.
Saturday night’s festivities began at 6 p.m. Saturday night with a buffet dinner featuring tri-tip and shrimp.
Music from America’s fabled Big Band era of the 1940s entertained guests while a 50/50 raffle, as well as silent and live auctions were held during the party. Door prizes were awarded, too.
Friends of the Carson City Library typically raises between $10,000 and $15,000 each year from the New Year’s Eve ball to fund the library’s needs.
