Carson City District Attorney’s Office

The Carson City District Attorney’s office will lead a Youth and Family Service Symposium at the Nevada Legislature Feb. 1-2, 2018. According to the D.A.’s office, the purposes of the event are to:

— Allow stakeholders in the area of juvenile and family services to educate one another about what they do and what resources they provide

— Identify areas of service overlap

— Identify and develop a plan to address service gaps

— Establish an ongoing dialogue about how to best serve children and families in the community

— Develop lines of communication to promote prompt and efficient delivery of service information

On Feb. 1, provider panels will share a presentation that explains the scope and nature of their services, as well as the challenges they are experiencing in our community.

Through these presentations, the service community will gain a more complete understanding of the assistance that is available and learn how they can support the mission of other providers. On February 2nd, the service providers will gather for a half-day roundtable session to discuss the overlaps and gaps in service revealed by the previous day’s presentations, develop a “service directory” to assist with referrals and collaboration, and discuss how members of the service community can support one another.

Buffy Okuma, Deputy District Attorney, is organizing the event and said she expects the Symposium to “remind us that our children and families are one of our most important assets as a community. We also expect it will result in a continued commitment to support each stakeholder in our never-ending efforts to serve our community.”

Assistant District Attorney, Kristin Luis, said she has high hopes for the Symposium. Luis, who served as the Juvenile Court Master in Carson City from 2010 to 2015, said, “Carson City has lots of resources available for children and families in need. If we can improve the coordination of those resources, that’s going to help serve the community better.” Luis added, “As the Juvenile Judge and now as Assistant District Attorney, I have seen that a little collaboration can go a long way to making big differences.”

Okuma reported several key groups are already committed to participating in the symposium, including the Carson City School District, the State of Nevada Division of Child and Family Services, Partnership Carson City, and the Carson City Department of Juvenile Services. She said anyone interested is welcome at the event. “Outreach and information are what this event is all about, so we invite any organization connected with youth or families in our community to join us.”

There is no cost to participants. Anyone interested in further information should contact Emily Nunez at 887-2070 or enunez@carson.org. Dec. 27 is the deadline to register.
