By Ed Choklek — The Saint Teresa Avila Conference, Saint Vincent de Paul Society is well on our way to making our $12,000 goal for private donations to support our 2024-2025 HUGS for Homeless winter clothing drive for Carson City homeless adults.

We are asking for $12,000 of monetary donations from the citizens of Carson City and its business community during the months of October, November and December to buy new winter clothing (coats, gloves, hats and socks) for our homeless population.

The Southwest Gas Foundation is this year’s HUGS for Homeless Campaign Leader with a $2500 donation. Current donations from individuals and local businesses are at $10,000. HUGS for Homeless is a multi-year strategic effort to prevent and protect our homeless citizens from cold-weather disease and illness and from cases of frost-bite and hypothermia. Our goal is ZERO winter deaths within our homeless population due to exposure to winter weather.

Thus far, 170 men’s/women’s new winter coats, 150 pairs of gloves, 160 woolen winter hats and 250 pairs of athletic socks have been distributed to our community allies who interact daily with our homeless citizens. Discounted clothing purchases from BIG 5 Sporting Goods, C-A-L Ranch and JC Penney have allowed the St. Vincent de Paul Society to save thousands of dollars on our volume purchases. We just dropped off coats, gloves, hats and socks to the emergency room at Carson Tahoe Hospital and at the Mallory Behavioral Health Center for their homeless patients.

All donations to the HUGS for Homeless winter clothing drive are 100% tax deductible. Your monetary contribution via check can be written out payable to “SVDPS” and then mailed to:
