Following eight seasons of skating and in need of approximately $100,000 worth of new equipment and repair, the Arlington Square Ice Rink in downtown Carson City will not be in operation this winter, according to city officials.

“It just reached the end of it’s life,” said Dan Earp, recreation superintendent for Carson City Parks and Recreation.

“We would be happy to either operate it, or provide a location for it, or somehow bring it back, but not completely supported by our general fund,” said Earp, adding the high cost of renovating the rink would require private support in order for an ice facility to return.

Carson City Parks and Recreation provides other activities for the winter season, and the new Activity Guide will soon be available, according to Earp. The current activity guide can be viewed here.

The Carson City Aquatics Facility has some options for activities during the winter, including a self-paced triathlon where participants track and record their own time and pace through the span of the event that runs until January 2.

Moreover, visitors can bring their own kayaks for drop-in pool kayaking on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m., through Dec. 18.

The Multi-Purpose Athletic Facility (MAC) has indoor pickle ball courts to use as the weather cools down. Pickle Ball is a lower impact version of tennis played on a smaller court.

On Dec. 22 from 6 to 9 p.m., Parks and Recreation staff will provide supervision to children and will offer pizza, crafts, and a movie so parents can finish some last minute holiday shopping. Register children kindergarten through fifth grade by Dec. 15 for $10 per child.
