A winter storm has begun to move into the region, bringing gusty winds to Carson City this Tuesday morning that will be followed by snow in the Sierra and down to the valley floor.

Around Carson City, winds are 20 mph from the southwest gusting to 35 mph. As of about 8:50 a.m. Carson City emergency dispatch says there hasn’t been any reports of down power or tree limbs around the city. That may change, however, as the storm continues to move into the region.

For those traveling over the Sierra for the Thanksgiving holiday period, the National Weather Service in Reno advises try to get over the passes by 10 a.m., or consider alternate travel routes. The Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Sierra region until 4 a.m. Wednesday. The Sierra could get up to a foot of snow.

Heavy snow will snarl traffic for much of Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night, with snow levels down to 2,000 to 3,000 feet on the western slopes. Roads will remain icy into Wednesday, so check road conditions before heading out and be prepared for long delays.

Across western Nevada, gusty winds lead to travel restrictions on US-395 and I-580. Snow should reach the I-80 and US-50 corridors by the Tuesday Evening commute. Be prepared for icy roads and a longer than normal drive.

As rain and snow is forecast northern Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation is prepared to help keep roads clear.

“Keeping drivers safe and connected is our top priority,” NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon explained. “And, as we are every year, we are fully stocked and prepared to remove snow and ice and help keep state roads clear.”

Winter Driving Safety

On average, more than 2,000 crashes occur statewide every year due to unsafe driving in snow, ice and other wet conditions, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to maintain a lane and overcorrecting. In winter weather, motorists are reminded to drive slowly for conditions and leave space between their vehicle and others. Wearing a seat belt and focusing on the road are other important driving tips for any type of weather.
