A 48-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of gross misdemeanor destruction of property and misdemeanor battery, harassment and disorderly conduct, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Deputies were called at 11:27 a.m. to a convenience store on Highway 50 East in reference to a threats report. Deputies arrived and made contact with the reporting party (RP) who advised they and a co-worker had to escort a customer out of the store after the customer began acting out.

The deputy asked what was meant by “acting out” and the RP stated the suspect attempted to complete his transaction multiple times using the chip on his card. He stated the man’s card was declined and that the pin pad screen displayed a message for the user to attempt the swipe on the card.

The reporting party stated the man then swiped his card and became upset by what was displayed. The man became agitated and did not want to provide a signature. The reporting party stated he and the co-worker informed the man he needed to leave the store and that the transaction was going to be canceled. The suspect then took the items off the counter and threw them across the store. The suspect then broke the pin pad machine when he hit it, the report states.

The deputy asked what happened next. The reporting party stated they escorted the man out of the store and stated they began to take pictures of the man and his vehicle while on the phone with dispatch. The RP stated the man made a comment to them that they needed to walk away or else they would get stabbed, the report states.

The deputy asked the RP if they observed a knife or if the man presented a knife. The RP stated he did not. They also said that as they walked around the vehicle to take more pictures of the vehicle, the suspect spit on him. The other employee stated all the comments from the suspect were made toward the reporting party and that he was not spit on, the report states.

Deputies reviewed camera footage of the incident and observed the suspect at the cash register. He was seen attempting to use the pin pad machine. He then swiped the card and is seen talking to both employees. Items were then taken off the counter and placed behind the cash register. The video showed the man then grabbing the remaining items off the counter and throwing them toward the north side of the store. The video then shows the suspect hitting the pin pad machine with his right hand. The machine then falls onto the counter, the report states.

Deputies made contact with the suspect, who did admit to throwing items from the counter of the store and hitting the pin pad machine before he left. He stated the employees threatened to beat him up. He said he did not want to fight as he is a big guy and was prepared if it happened. The suspect stated he then observed an employee walk toward the rear of this vehicle with his phone in his hand. He stated he did spit on the man before he got into his vehicle.

The deputy asked the suspect if he ever mentioned stabbing. He stated he did not. The deputy asked if he had a knife and threaten to stab and he stated he did not.
