In a strong showing of community support, Tazmanian Boxing Club owner Francisco Rodriguez cut the ribbon to his gym’s new 8,000 square-foot fitness facility Saturday morning with the help of family, friends, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and Supervisor Lori Bagwell joined Rodriguez behind the ribbon with the giant pair of scissors after presenting him with an official certificate of recognition from the city.

Lisa Lee also presented Rodriguez with a membership certificate from the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

Though boxing is at the heart of Tazmanian Boxing Club, the fitness center located at 3737 N. Carson Street features much more than sparring.

Rodriguez, a former bantam-weight professional boxing champion, has developed a community reputation over the years for reaching out to populations in need of a positive work-out experience.

Tazmanian Boxing Club has delivered fitness to senior citizens, youth of all ages, the developmentally disabled, as well as patients suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.

The gym has been the Northern Nevada home of Rock Steady Boxing, an Indianapolis, IN-based Parkinson’s fitness program, for the past three years.

Rodriguez has also introduced an anti-bullying program for youth and he brought in a mentor of his, Juan Torres, a former professional kickboxing champion, to run Torres Mixed Martial Arts within Tazmanian Boxing Club.

The club features two sparring rings, a mixed martial arts cage, complete competitive training gym in the back, therapeutic training up front, women’s cardio, personal training and nutrition services.

For general information, email the club at ciscorboxing1@yahoo.com or call Rodriguez at 775-722-1752. For information about kickboxing and mixed martial arts, contact Juan Torres at 702-287-7454.
