By Denise Clodjeaux — Carson City District Attorney Garrit Pruyt will be the guest speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which takes place Tuesday, Oct. 7, at noon, in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom.

Pruyt will discuss the process of prosecuting criminal cases, including case charging, evidence review, contested hearings, communication with victims of crime, and the various ways criminal cases conclude. He says the process is very complex.

“Prosecutors are tasked with applying all known facts of a criminal incident to the law in a fair and unbiased manner. The age-old adage that there are two sides to every story couldn’t be truer in criminal proceedings,” he explains, adding, “the pursuit of justice charts a rocky path through varying factual accounts, physical and circumstantial evidence, and the intricacies of the law.”

Pruyt will also point out how the Carson City District Attorney’s office differs from most others in the state. “As a consolidated municipality, the wide array of necessary legal services required for a municipality to function is centralized within the Carson City District Attorney’s Office, unlike other Nevada counties, where many of these legal duties are spread amongst city attorneys and county counsel.”

He says the system does have its advantages. “While this arrangement often requires Deputy District Attorneys to jump from one specialty to another, it provides the City and its residents with a uniquely efficient and highly skilled legal team.”
