Before Barney had a cozy bed and a name, he had a cave under a rock in Mills Park—and apparently, a pretty good eye for real estate. His spot was near water, and he’d even caught himself a bird for dinner. Barney was managing life outdoors on his own terms. But with cold weather coming and the many dangers of park life, his odds weren’t good.

A kind person brought him to safety. At first, Barney made his opinions about the whole arrangement very clear. He was an unneutered young fellow who had no interest in sharing his space with other cats and was extremely particular about who was allowed to touch him and where they were allowed to touch. Two months later, he’s neutered, vaccinated, calmer and much more settled. With people he likes, he is affectionate and friendly. He still has opinions, of course but Barney is willing to compromise—within reason, and preferably on his schedule.
Between one and two years old, this handsome short-haired black cat is exceptionally smart, energetic, and curious. He’s an incredible athlete who loves to leap, climb, and play. He also enjoys pets from people he likes, though he’ll let you know through his body language when he’s had enough. Respecting that signal is essential; Barney needs a person who listens when he says, “That’s quite enough, thank you.”
Barney can tolerate other cats in limited doses, but his dream home would make him the one and only feline. He’s not a good match for a first-time cat owner, but for someone experienced, patient, and ready to appreciate a cat with a big personality, he could be amazing. One volunteer has begun harness training him, and with time and patience, Barney may even become a leash-walking adventurer.
We waited until Halloween was over to introduce Barney for adoption, and now this clever little panther is ready to leave his solitary room and start his next chapter. His purrfect family could be the one that comes to meet him this weekend.
Come visit Barney this weekend at Catmandu. We are located at 1829 Brown Street. Adoption hours are Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please arrive by 3 p.m. so you’ll have plenty of time to get to know the cats before adoptions close.
