Zach Sever and Walker MacKenzie cracked the top five to lead the Carson High School cross country team captured third-place as a team on Saturday at the fourth annual Truckee Invitational.

The varsity boys gold medal race on a chilly day at Ponderosa Golf Course developed into a duel between Teagan Hansen of Sierra Lutheran and Sever, who finished first and second with respective times of 17:07 and 17:15 over the 5-kilometer layout.

MacKenzie ran a season-best 17:52 to place fifth as Carson finished third in the 11-team field with 78 points. Sophomore Asher Koch placed 28th (19:16), sophomore Ethan Baulere 33rd (19:26) and freshman Dominic Valdez 34th (19:28). Jakob Heller also ran 19:39 and Kyle Holloway 20:05 for the Senators. Koch, Baulere, Valdez and Holloway had personal record times, noteworthy achievements considering the 6,000-foot altitude.

Douglas placed four runners in the top 10 and seven among the top 21 to win the team by a 39-60 margin over Truckee.

In the varsity girls race, Hannah Kaiser placed third in 21:16 and Carson took second as a team with 39 points, not far behind Truckee’s 25.

Claire Cartier placed 14th (22:56), Samantha Schofield 16th (23:17), Hailey Ponczoch 20th (23:43) and Ava Brehm 24rd (23:57) to complete the team scoring. Sydney Romeo also ran 24:44 to finish among the top 30. Cartier, Schofield, Brehm and Romeo all logged personal best times.

Isabel Cartier with a 7 minute imporvment over her league 3 5k time placed ninth in the JV girls race (25:10.A time which moved her up to 7th on Varsity Team. Lydia Thornley placed 25th (29:05) a huge improvment and Jardeh Lopez 26th (29:10).

Andrew Ingram placed third in the JV boys race and Gabe Crossman ninth with respective times of 19:34 and 20:37. They were coming off two weeks of injuries and And Andrew reclaimed his place on varsity. Cody Jackson,a rapidly improving Jr, placed 11th (20:39), Sameul Davis 15th (20:46) had a 5 minute improvment of his previous 5k as didAlex Barr 21st (21:10). Ingram’s time was a personal best.

Next up is the Reed Invitational next Friday at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex. Starting time is 3 PM.
