The Carson City Senior Center is gearing up for a busy October by offering several programs and workshops that provide active and engaging opportunities in areas of health, history, arts and more. Check out the events, calendar and newsletter below.

Jewelry Sale to Benefit Meals on Wheels 

The Carson City Senior Center will have its annual Jewelry Sale on Thursday, October 3 and Friday, October 4, from 9-2pm. Brand new and gently used jewelry, handbags, wallets, pocket watches, belt buckets, and more will be on sale. All proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels Carson City. Follies performs “Ocean Commotion” raising funds for Meals on Wheels

Gearing up for its twenty-sixth year, the 2024 Follies presents, Ocean Commotion, setting the stage for clogging, tap dancing, musical acts, poetry, belly dancing, and comedic acts bringing the sea to the stage and bound to entertain all. Tickets for the show are $10 and will be sold one-hour prior to the first act. Showtimes are Friday, October 4 at 7pm and Saturday, October 5 at 2pm at the Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. Local Senior Center hosts a fall canvas Paint Party 

Van Gogh & Vino will lead you step by step, so no artistic experience is necessary. All painting supplies included (canvas, paint, brushes, etc.). The event is on Tuesday, October 7, at 2 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, Nevada Room (West End). Memories of Bonanza – a Living History Program

Ride with us back to those golden days of yester-year,…when Ben, Adam, Hoss and Little Joe stood for honesty, decency…and owned about 1/3 of the Lake Tahoe Basin. Using seldom seen images and extensive research, local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff bring the Cartwrights and their socially edge cutting ways back to life in an informative, amusing and entertaining 55-minute slide show presentation…plus…a surprise ending! The program is on Tuesday, October 8 at 1:30pm at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, in the Nevada Room (West End). The program is free and RSVP not necessary. Dance Party & Potluck 

Dance the night away with live music with Don and Nadine on Saturday, October 12 from 6-9pm. Admission is $10 per person and guests are asked to bring a dish to share. Dances are held the 1st Saturday of each month (with the exception of October) and is open to all ages. The dance is at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, in the Sagebrush Dining Room. Living History: Obscure History of the Eastern Sierra, Part Two

In part two of this series, local historians David & Gayle Woodruff continue a reflective look at some of the Eastern Sierra’s deep, rich, and little-known history. Using vintage photos and extensive research, the Woodruffs recount a few of these esoteric anecdotes, in a free 55-minute slide show presentation on Tuesday, October 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, Nevada Room (west end). A Conversation with Janice Oberding

Interact with historian, true crime buff, paranormal enthusiast and investigator, Janice Oberding, on Tuesday, October 15 at 12:30pm at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, Joshua Tree (East End). Oberding is the author of more than 50 books on topics ranging from ghosts to true crime to history, the strange and unusual, and mystery. She writes both non-fiction and fiction. Health Steps for Older Adults – a Fall Prevention Workshop

Healthy Steps for Older Adults (HSOA) is a free, small-group workshop proven to reduce falls. The workshop also provides steps to make homes safer, manage medicines, and learn how to improve strength, balance, and overall fitness, along with providing other resources to help prevent falls. HSOA workshops are for any older adult who wants to maintain mobility and independence. Join us and learn basic mobile device skills, email, computer navigation, or brush up on your internet safety on October 14-16, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Bring a friend or family member. A Talk with Heather Segale, TERC

Heather Segale is responsible for providing the intellectual and administrative leadership in the education and outreach component of the mission for the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC). She also coordinates TERC’s participation in regional outreach and oversees the marketing plans for TERC’s two science education centers. Fundraiser for Breast Cancer at the Hidden Treasures Gift Shop
